Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, “Swept Away” is Lina Wertmüller’s most famous and controversial film about sex, love and politics. On an elegant yacht cruising off the coast of Sardinia, Raffaella (Mariangela Melato), a rich and beautiful capitalist, enjoys tormenting the communist sailor Gennarino (Giancarlo Giannini). Fate spins a different scenario and the roles are reversed when the two are stranded together on a deserted island. To survive, Raffaella must submit to Gennarino. The dramatic situation reaches its climax when they are rescued. They must find out if their love can survive the harsh realities of civilization.
